In today’s day and age, having a professional headshot is more important than ever. With social media being such a big part of our lives, potential employers, clients, and connections often look at our profile pictures before they even read our names. That’s why ensuring we put our best foot forward with a great headshot is crucial. But what does that mean?
This article will explore the dos and don’ts of what to wear for your professional headshot. From colors to patterns to accessories and more, read on for some great tips to help you look your best in your next headshot!
Should my wardrobe be Business Professional or Business Casual?
In today’s market, many businesses’ wardrobes lean towards more business casual than in the past. Therefore, I would describe most corporate headshots I photograph as business casual.
For men, start with a tailored navy blazer. Underneath, wear a dress shirt. Next, choose pants that are classic and fit well – no need for anything fancy here. Finally, if you want a bit of personality, consider adding a stylish shirt with a pattern under your jacket and skipping the tie.
If your position requires a professional suit and tie look, we suggest bringing several options on ties so we can help you pick the most polished look possible. You might also consider adding another look that cuts the tie and is a bit more business casual. Most of our clients find the need to have two or three looks for their online presence.
In most cases, one photo will not fit all your needs. For example, consider a suit and tie look for a resume on your company website (depending on your line of work), a nice sport coat with a stylish shirt for your LinkedIn profile, and maybe even a professional yet more casual look for your other social media accounts. Dressing your look up, and down can give you much flexibility when deciding which image is appropriate for each use.

For women, start with a tailored blazer in navy or black. Underneath, wear a dress shirt or blouse with a pop of color for a professional business look. Colors should compliment your skin tone. You may also choose colors that coordinate with the branding colors of your business or corporation. Next, select slacks or a classic skirt that fits well – again, there is no need for anything too fancy. Often in a headshot, your pants will not show unless you need a more relaxed seated look. Finally, lose the jacket for a more business casual look and go with a well-fit blouse and a color that complements your look.

What colors look best in a professional headshot?
You can never go wrong with neutral colors like black, gray, navy, or brown. These colors are classic and professional. However, we suggest adding a pop of color to help you stand out in a crowded market. You want to avoid busy patterns, not to distract from your face. But a nice pop of color helps your skin tone not wash out and enables you to stand out in sea photographs. The color you wear says about you. Do you want the “boss” power shot look? Choose a jewel tone as a dominant power color, or are you looking for a softer modern, fresh look that is pleasant? Choose colors that are softer in the pastel color range.
How to accessorize for a professional headshot
When it comes to your professional headshot, you want to look polished and put together. This means choosing the right accessories to complement your outfit. Stick to classic and understated jewelry; think diamonds, hoops, studs, gold, or silver. Avoid anything too flashy or attention-grabbing.
If you wear glasses, ensure they are clean and free of smudges. Choose a frame that compliments your face shape. If you have different options, bring them, and we can see which pair photographs best. You may also consider being photographed with and without your glasses, depending on how often you wear them.
What type of shoes to wear for a professional headshot
In most instances, your shoes will not show in your professional headshot, so we suggest wearing comfortable shoes. However, if you want a more casual seated look where your shoes might show, we recommend wearing shoes that are appropriate for your outfit choice.
Suppose you plan on having your shoe show. Make sure that your shoes are clean and well-maintained. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to remember that your headshot is an opportunity to make a great first impression – dirty or scuffed-up shoes will not give off the best impression. Take the time to polish your shoes before your headshot session so that they look their best.
Finally, pay attention to the color of your shoes. Black or dark brown dress shoes are always a safe bet, but depending on the rest of your outfit (and the overall vibe you’re going for), you could also try a lighter shade like tan or grey.
Long or short sleeves?
Another thing to consider is what kind of message you want to convey with your outfit. For example, short sleeves can give off a more casual and relaxed vibe, while long sleeves can make you look more formal and put-together. Choose the sleeve length best fits the image you’re trying to project.
Think about what kind of clothing will complement your features best. For example, if you have nice arms or shoulders, short sleeves might show them off in a flattering way. On the other hand, if you’re self-conscious about your arms or upper body, long sleeves might be a better choice for you.
No matter what you choose, make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your outfit. That’s the most important thing!
Options, Options, Options.
Lastly, bring more options than you need; we work with you to help ensure you have chosen the best choices possible. We work with you and photograph several options so you can choose the looks you like best.
